WinCC 7.5 CC_ExternalBrowsing, OLE DB Provider, ArchiveConnector

I have already reached the point where I know how to work with the 'WinCC OLE DB Provider' but it is the settings of WinCC itself which is not clear to me in the manuals. The link is done on SQL on the same server where WinCC is running. So everything is on 1 PC. So I wonder how to set up the archives in WinCC so that the database 'CC_ExternalBrowsing' is automatically created with the correct links to the archive databases. At first I thought that this should be done with the 'ArchiveConnector', but this tool does not run automatically. Anyone already have experience with this? Thx in advance

bg2492 Posts: 7298 Rating: (2188)	Hello ThaKibosh, the database 'CC_ExternalBrowsing' has a similar catalog-function as the runtime-database in the WinCC-project. But it is only used for accessing databases, which have been backuped, and are activated by the ArchiveConnector for using with options like Connectivity Pack Server or DataMonitor. So if I understand correctly we have to connect directly to the runtime database if we want to read the actual tag archives. The DB ending on 'R' en with time and date in the name. A shame really, because the runtime database changes name under certain circumstances after stopping and restarting WinCC. This makes it more difficult to read the database with external software. The link should then become dynamic.

In VBS, you can read a lot of things from SCADA tags and make your querries independent.... f.e.: with this, I normally read DB name and PC name and then use this to open archives... ThaKibosh Bronze Member Joined: 5/31/2011 Last visit: 8/7/2025 Posts: 190 Rating: (31)	Within WinCC it's no issue I know. But we wan't to read out the values with Microsoft PowerBI. It works, but for the PowerBI connector it is not helpfull when the DB name changes.

You can also access the actual runtime data without configuring any back-up archives. To activate "CC_External_Browsing" just open "WinCC Archive Connector" without making any configuration. Just leave everything empty. In the tab "Connect/Disconnect Archive" just click "Connect". Now "CC_external_Browsing" magically appears as a database in SQL and you can read out tag-logging and alarm-loggings with the WinCC OLEDB Provider. Now I'm still looking to access the "User Archives" without having to connect to the runtime database.

But as far as I know now you have to make a connection with the current WinCC Runtime database. The name of this database has a "timestamp" and ends with "R". If you make changes to WinCC, the name may change. As a result, all links you made are broken and have to be rebuilt. To counter this, you have for tag logging and alarm logging the WinCC OLEDB Provider that reads out archives via a detour, being the 'CC_ExternalBrowsing' database. However, Siemens has forgotten to include the user archives as far as I now know. The end goal of all this is to make a connection between WinCC User archives and Microsoft PowerBI. You cannot use dynamic database names in powerbi. So you cannot first get the runtime name somewhere and then enter it. So should there be something wrong what I wrote above, be sure to correct me. Maybe you will have the solution and make me and many others very happy.

bg2492 Posts: 7298 Rating: (2188)	Hallo ThaKibosh, you can read out the actual datasourcename of the runtime-database from the internal systemtag "@DatasourceNameRT" in the Tagmanagement of the WinCC-Project.
