Can copy the previous program blocks from old cpu to new cpu?

Perhaps the attached file might help.

 HI, I have a question, if we delete the cpu (416-2dp) and put another (416-3pn/dp), and then copy the previous program blocks to new cpu (all of blocks and old system data block) after downloading program on new PLC, is there any fault on CPU?

the system data blocks are dependent of the CPU and periphery and will be generated from STEP 7 during the compilation of the hardware configuration. Copy not the system data blocks from the old CPU into the program folder of the new CPU, because the system data blocks of CPU 416-2 DP and CPU 416-3 PN/DP are different.

In this case delete the system data blocks and generate new with compilation of the hardware configuration.

if I dont delete system data block and after copying complete program from old PLC to new one, can I just go to hardware configuration and again compile the hardware with pressing save and compile? I mean the SDB would have replace with the new one automatically?

 thank you dchartier. but I want to change the whole system, I mean the new CPU type can't just replace by drag and drop (new CPU: 416-3pn/dp      old CPU:416-2DP) so I delete old CPU and because of deleting, all of blocks removed, then add new CPU and then copy old blocks from previous program (program with old cpu) to new one.

Hello mprakavanan;

Compiling the hardware configuration and downoading it to the new CPU willl modify the SDBs for the new controller, as you say.

Step 7 v5.x makes the replacement by a new controller quite easy, and especially it willl tell you if the new mpdel can replce the old one without issues.

Simply right click on the present controller in HWConfig -> Change Device. now you can select the new model in the catalog table. Or you can Drag & Drop the new model from the HW Catalog and place it over the old one in the rack: if the chenge is possible a message will pop up tellimg you the new CPU will be active.  Compile and download the new hardware configuration now; the program blocks will not be affected by the change.
