S_ODT timer BI & BCD value decreases after 10 sec interval

CoreGuy Experienced Member Joined: 3/11/2015 Last visit: 12/9/2025 Posts: 70 Rating: (4)	Hi guys, I'm facing a problem which is- 1) If the set point (TV value) for S_ODT Timer is kept 5 min (300 sec), then the value (time) decreases in sec from 300, in both BI & BCD. Refer attached image for reference. 2) If the same is kept as 1 hour which is 3600 sec, the BI & BCD value decreases from 360 (& not from 3600), & each decrease in BI/BCD is after 10 sec, like if Timer reaches from 59 Min 90 sec to 59 min 80 sec, BI/BCD value will be 719. Could anyone let me know the cause behind it? Refer attached image for reference. Software: TIA V17 P.S.: The software was in SIMATIC Manager step 7. earlier. Now migrated to TIA V17 by our Client, hence still the S_ODT timers are used. And could anyone let me know the difference between BI & BCD values? Silver Member Joined: 6/20/2017 Last visit: 10/6/2025 Posts: 486 Rating: (41)	This kind of timers are old and the time i stored in the old S5TIME format, where the with only 16 bit it's stored the time and the base time multiplier. Due of this reason it can't be precise. If you are shearching a more defined timers, you can search in the IEC standard library, there is the TON function block, or write your own timer from the time ticks counter: TIME_TICK().

But I had to use a subtractor to display actual time elapse in decreasing order. Since in TON, elapse timer starts from zero but in S_ODT & S_OFFDT, it starts from TV which is our setpoint (static or dynamic). The TON timer logic is present in the above attachments in my 1st post, for reference. But still I wanted to know whether is this a bug for S_ODT & S_OFFDT timers in TIA. Regards, CoreGuy

It is a feature of them and you have to live with it. To tell the truth for example, I have not been using them for at least 20 years, neither in the 300/400 series CPUs let alone with Tia Portal. Also to have all useful data available: elapsed time, time remaining, and others, I wrote my own timers with fixed time base to the millisecond. If you don't like the features of the libraries offered by the development environment you use, you can write what you want there. If there is one feature that is truly appreciable in S7, all along, it is that you can write your own software almost without limitation. (There would be much to say about the leaks we had with Tia Portal but that is another story).
