The question therefore is what is the advantege of the Datenbuffer? In my programm so fare I am using signals from the safety directly in standard code to diagnose the current state of light barriers, doors, etc. Is there any downside to that?

as far as I know this recommendation is mainly to prevent data corruption of the safety program, which may occur when a variable used in the safety program is changed while the safety program is being processed (for example through user inputs on the HMI).
