Somethings that needSTL /or absolut adressig in the past, could be alredy solved with LAD / simbolicin thisnew tecnolgy (for example date and time splitable). Important is don't lose the functionalities, independently the technology (STL, SCL, etc.). Sure, almost everything can be done with LAD, but in sheer programming speed and optimization of code, STL is the clear winner. Alot faster then LAD and a lot less prone to syntax errors then SCL. I get what they are trying to do. All other PLC brands use almost exclusively LAD. And Siemens now wants to make it easier for them to change from what they know, to the unknown thing that is Siemens. A thing that has a reputation of being very hard to learn. The day STL gets dropped completely will be a sad day in PLC history.

This is not a reason (nor an excuse) not to implement STL functionality, since noone is forcing anyone to use STL, but it seems that this situation is forcing users to use LAD. One will swap over to Siemens for the quality, the support, the software, all the factors that minimize the developing time and thus maximizing the profit from an engineering (as well as financial) point of view. However, IMHO I think there is a very good reason that the IEC-61131 standard defines a text language (the missing STL), and it is a good thing to adhere to standards. Aristotelis

hernan_e Posts: 53 Rating: (2)	I think the opposite and I could say that when system complexity grows, SCL is far better than STL I understand the need of STL, perhaps you have experience in STL, and libraries, and that's a great value, but to evaluate a language itself you have to take account more objetive points When programing any complex system Readability is a must for Maintainability, and control flow statement are really clearer than testing bits and jumps, variable names are far easy to read than local STL bits with L and numbers notation, pointers in STL aren't simple neither, in SCL you can use base type arrays, UDT arrays, loops, named indexes, indirect addressing, code is then more readable and clear, furthermore it's based on an standar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_61131-3 give SCL a chance and perhaps you won't back to STL, except in an exceptional situation ;)

Marko Bursic Posts: 1410 Rating: (154)	I had tried to make a complex SCL program and then whatched the compiled program in STL, and I have to say that compiler did a good job. I wold make more STL code and not so optimized as compiler did. So I use ladder and SCL, no STL anymore.

All I can say is: Thank you Siemens and two up for this(I shall place SP2 under my X-Mas tree ).
