Smoothing of analog values

Good afternoon!

Could you please clarify the question regarding smoothing parameter for Analog inputs (for ex SM331)?

I have analog values which used for the Voltage and Power control. At present moment smoothing is "weak". Is it normal to set it to "none"? How it can affect to system? Maybe "noise" or bad accuracy of measurements? Is it recommended or not?  The main issue that i need to make measurements a bit faster.

I think it's like averaging of defined number of analog values, also time plays role here so with higher smoothing more analog values are count for more long time to get better result in my opinion.

This is depending about the measured value (T°, Pressure, Level..), in case of T° measurement, for example ambient temperature this value don't change suddenly, this kind of T° measurement  don't meet a big fluctuation as well as the sensor response can be too long, so in this case the smoothing is not a must.

But in case of high fluctuation measurement such as speed or flow, sometime the value can meet peak or high fluctuation during some millisecond as  a consequence inopportune triggering of PLC output (the output can close or open a valve or shutdown a motor or other..), so in order to avoid this kind of situation it's interesting to smooth the signal in order to limit  peak or noise.

Tthe smoothing is a medium value and the SM331 need many value in order to make the medium value (integration time) so in this case you increase the reliability of the signal using the integration time as filter that smooth the value by integration, but the speed of the Module decrease because you need time and many value for smooth the signal so the new value is availlable after the integration time 20ms, or 100ms depending of the setting and the module, in some case it's sufficient but in some case it's too long.

I posted some interesting picture regarding the smoothing of S7-1200 module but in most of case the principle are the same enjoyed! if the smoothing is to long for you you can change the module and use HS module (High Speed Module), in this case of module the module use the sampling of value it's more fast but in case of peak appearance you can do anything in order to smooth a peak.
