What is Functional Stand?

I can upgrade a 1200 to firmware 4.2 but: NOTICE:S7-1200 CPUs with Functional Stand 05 (FS: 05) or later cannot be downgraded to firmware versions prior to V4.2.0.

What the heck is FS: 05? my google, Siemens manuals& site returns silence.

Life is getiing difficult with the 1200 & V14. Where V13 was able to do all (most?) versions of tia & firmware you need V14 for firmware >= 4.2 and V13 for the rest. sigh, no backwards compatibilityand if I do own FS5 no way to go back either...

Not a good start for v14 imho.

X34 is a newer version of the CPU compared to X23.

The right side of the CPU has some manufacturing information. If you find "E-Stand:' or "FS:" printed on the CPU, right next to the Signal Module connector, you should also see a number right after it.

X23 should read "E-Stand:" or "FS:" 01

X34 should read "E-Stand:" or" FS:" 02

Does this make sense?

Ah, removing plc's from rack and they show fs < 5. Guess I can switch back and forth between firmwares then.
