Have anyone tried having a raspberry pi GUI/ HMI with ProfiNet communication with a Simatic S7-1200? I need some help getting started

I haven't done it, but what I would use is Snap7 for PLC - RPi communication and a Python (or any other language you are familiar with) GUI framework for visualisation.

no. If you can make some good training for yourself you can create TCP or UDP open user communication on both devices, you can select who will be Server/Client. Then you can simply define your frame and exchange data as you need. Then you can make all what you want, control S7-1200 outputs and also show on Raspberry statuses via exchange data. Helpful?

If your "HMI" should only visualise some Tags and so on you could also use Userdefined Webpages of the S71200 PLC

Simply in case of use web pages he must implement/know how to do it. Also I don't expect native Profinet connection on Raspberry, so if he isn't skilled with web pages he must use mentioned Kahl's library, in this case he only need implement read/write on Raspbery, nothing to do with communiaction on S7 side (question is how this system affect speed and how much data) or use my mentioned TCP connection but must implement on both sides. You could use the OPC UA interface via the software FreeopcUA. the library is C++ native, but a port for python existe.

I use it to stress the OPC interface and it work great.

A free OPC UA browser come with it and it help a lot.

In the tag configuration the OPC UA and the HMI share the same acces right level.

Are you sure? Only the new s71500 Firemware Version V2.0 could use a s OPC UA Server directly on the device. But with S71200 you need also a  OPC UA Server to get access to it.

And Simatic Net OPC Server is not a cheap solution. ;-)
