Mike C Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	I am getting ready to back up 17 SINUMERIK 840D's that we currently have in production. Has anyone used any type of imaging software for these machines. We are thinking of using either Symantic Live Update, or Ghost images of these machines. Are there any pitfalls that I have to be wary of? I can't take a plant down doing this, so any insight would be most helpful. Mike Chayko

SteveJ Posts: 328 Rating: (29)	Mike More information on your equipment is needed. What equipment do you need to backup? HMI or NCU? If the HMI is to be backed up, This is not possible when the machines are running, as it requires the HMI to re-boot into a service menu. Although, the software required is already installed on the PCU/MMC. Backup of the NCU (NC & PLC) is not recommended as tool data and user data will be changing as the machines run. Please give more information of your equipment, alternativley contact your local Siemens Office for further assistance. Best regards SteveJ

The controls engineer has asked me to create a backup stategy in case of hard drive failure. I was told that the system ran Windows 2000. I would assume by that , it is the HMI that he would like to have a backup of. This would also assume, that the NCU is a controller? Any help further help would be appreciated

SteveJ Posts: 328 Rating: (29)	Hi Mike The HMI (Human Machine Interface) will be running on top of a standard operating system. Dos, WFW 3.11, Win95 and more recently Xp Pro. The HMI has an inbuilt service tools menu which will allow backup to an external PC. The NCU has operating data resident on it, in the form of Machine data and user programs, Also the PLC is mounted within the NCU, this too has data which also requires backup from time to time. To acheive this, Series startup files should be made to backup the PLC and NC data. these archive files can be made onto the HDD of the HMI but obviously, should the HMI HDD fail then all archives will also be lost. For this reason, series startup files should be stored remotely as well as on the HMI HDD. Dependent on the type of HMI (PCU50 or MMC103) different procedures are required for accessing the service tools and consequently, different procedures for backing up the HDD of the HMI. All of which can only be done in a machine stop condition. For this reason, might i suggest you contact your local Siemens office and possible arrange an engineer to visit and demonstrate these procedures. what is your general location? i couldadviselocalcontact details.
