High Speed Counter with Incremental Encoder

Saruca Posts: 122 Rating: (1)	Hi everyone, I'm currently using a S7-314C -2 DP CPU and I would like to connect an incremental encoder to its high speed counter. I need to count encoder pulses and when the number of pulses reaches certain value execute an interruption (OB40). I've been reading all the documentation related to the matter and also I've searched around the forum but I'm still not sure about how to do this. Should I use SFB47? Or would configuring the paremeters in HW Config for the high speed counter module be enough? It's the first time I'm doing this so I have no clue. Thanks in advance

In most cases HW config is enough, you can thenchange setpoints in user program (but not all of them) with sending different command requests to the counter. You can use it like for counting and when the distance is reached it triggers interrupt, or you can measure frequency.Using SFB47 or SFB48 is a must . What do you exactly need ?

I don't need to use any of the variables related to the high speed counter. Would configuring the parameters in HW config enough to trigger the interrupt? Thanks again

In any case you need to use SFB in your program, because you have to set SW_GATE for working, why you don't like the SFB? Or it can be enabled via HW_GATE, you can also configure HW to use input/output dio signals on module, in that situation I think you don't need sfb, but I never tried that.

Saruca Posts: 122 Rating: (1)	Hi Marko, the reason why I want to configure the encoder just using HW is because I need the PLC to perform a number of other tasks and I wanted to save some time. If I understand correctly, the counter only counts when the gate is enabled, right? According to that, I will need to enable the DI configured as HW gate in my CPU. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. Saruca Posts: 122 Rating: (1)	Finally it's working. I initiate the count using the SW_GATE input in SFB47 as you told me. When the count reaches certain value of pulses it executes OB40. Now that it's working ok I realize it wasn't so difficult after all. Thanks again for your help
