SM338 Position Input Module

e_ashish Posts: 37 Rating: (0)	I am looking for a advice on step 7 programming. I am using an SSI absolute encoder to measure distance traveled. The encoder is connected to a SM338 Position Input Module which is configured to provide 25 bit Gray code values for use in the step 7 programme. What type of signal I will be getting through the module, will it be number of pulses or I will get signal directly in mm ( distance) Is there any standard function to read SSI signal for SM 338? If the encoder SSI frame is Gray and consist only of position value then it can be converted directly to natural binary in the module (when you set encoder type - Gray). Otherwise you should select binary and strip position info out of the SSI frame in the program and do conversion Gray->natural by yourself. More info you can find in this manual.

DavidBrown Gold Member Joined: 6/29/2012 Last visit: 12/25/2023 Posts: 975 Rating: (9)	If the encoder gives out gray coded signals, is automatic convertion to binary only correctly possible if there is only the position data (right aligned) in the encoder data? If the encoder has the postion value in gray but has some statusbits at the left of the position value, does that mean I cannot acitvate the gray to binary conversion by the module, and that I have to do the gray to binary in the code? If so, are there standard function for gray to binary?
