Simatic.SV Advanced Member Joined: 11/5/2005 Last visit: 9/21/2025 Posts: 20 Rating: (1)	Hi! I'm running WinCC Flex 2007 Runtime on an Windows XP SP2 computer. I'm communicating with and S7-300 315.2DP CPU through an MPI / RS232 PC Adapter, from the serial COM port of the PC through the adapter to the MPI port of the CPU. The WinCC Application starts ok and communicates for some minutes, but the suddently everything freezes and I can't even shut down WinCC RT. I have to reboot the PC completely every time this happens. I already tried all possible combinations of settings in the COM port and in the SET PG/PC interface application in the control panel, but without success. What can be happening? Any ideas? Thanks!

The Body Posts: 836 Rating: (71)	Many reasons can causing this problem, e.g. terminating resistors, cables... Although the MPI/RS232 Adapter can be used, I would suggest you to use a CP5611. We also tried to convince the client of using a CP, but he insisted on an "external" and simple way of communication. We will try with an USB/MPI adapter, to check if we are having any problems with the RS232 communication port. Do you recommend any special settings for the COM port on the PC to have the best communication to the PLC and WinCC Flex. Thanks

The Brain Posts: 1611 Rating: (121)	Hi, do you want to use a USB/MPI adapter for communication? This will not be run! You can only use MPI/Profibus Or use Ethernet with a Ethernet CP for the PLC. Maybe you use a PC/PPI Adpater, but then you need a S7 200! regards,

As soon as we uninstalled this Service Pack and other update files, and re-installed Service Pack 2, we got the serial - to - MPI communication working without problems, using the PC-Adaper. Before procure the hardwares I would like to have some more information input. Would appreciate you could share such information, if available. My question is: 1. Have you tested MPI / USB adapter? Do you think is there any problem for this communication as a permanent installation? 2. How much is the communication load (or how many analogue parameters or binary signals)in your system? Simatic.SV Advanced Member Joined: 11/5/2005 Last visit: 9/21/2025 Posts: 20 Rating: (1)	Dear hgq: As far as we tested, both Serial/MPI and USB/MPI adapters worked fine under Windows XP SP2, the troubles we had with both adapters had to do with the new Service Pack 3 for Windows XP Pro. Although now our communication between the WinCCFlex RT and the S7-300 is working fine and without problems, I really would not recommend to use this type of link as a permanent communication way, specially not the USB/MPI adapter. We installed this type of communication because we had the Serial/MPI adapter on site and our customer could not wait the delivery time for a new CP. The next step in this project is to install such a CP and then take away the PC-Adapter. As far as I read, USB may sound a much more attractive and "modern" way of communication, specially considering that most PCs now don't even include a serial RS232 port, but USB is not as stable and repetitive as serial communication. If possible, I would recommend to purchase a "formal" CP from Siemens for the WinCC Flex MPI communication to the PLC. It may cost a little bit more of course, but it will surely avoid some headaches in the future. I hope this helps. Regards.

The system was installed in 2002, anyway believe the problem has been solved in the newer version of the CP5613. Best Regards, hgq

My operating system is windows xp service pack 2 but one of my mpi adapter was damaged after 5-6 hours successful working.
