Profibus DP - V2

I know that V2 enables communications between slaves and that it reduces overhead that existed when all communication was through master. I also learn that safety applications with profibus use V2 protocol, but I'm not sure why. Can you provide more detail explanation or direct me to useful resources? Thanks
