I'm need to set up comm with a (S7-300 PLC that has a CPU 317-2DP in the unit) and my PC laptop with my serial connector.

What cable is needed between my Laptop using Step 7 and a S7-300 with a 9pin connector. Can I use a reg straight 9pin serial cable or does it have to be a straight 9pin cable using only selected4pins.

In your PC you'll use your serial port. But it needs "converter" to connect with MPI/DP port of CPU. Have a look at manual, see part 6.3 for pinout of MPI/DP: SIMATIC PC Adapter/TS Adapter

I think you can use PC adapter if you got a COM port or if you do not have a COM port you can use PC adapter USB also you can use CP 5512 with your PCIMCA slot. For part numbers please go through ST70 catalog.

You cannot make a direct connection with your COM port in your computer because it is RS232 and Siemens use different protocols of RS485 (like MPI, Profi bus).

probably yes, but with that RS-232 functionality I'm not sure on Win7 OS. Also this adapter is only MPI not supported DP probably. I think that on Win XP it can work without problems. In my opinion I'll be look for new type adapter with USB connection, also supported PPI and DP protocols, maybe like CP5711. Give info.
