Breakpoints and stepping

Robert Carlsson Posts: 20 Rating: (0)	Hey all! I'm developing a FB in Step 7, and think I've run into a pretty nasty bug. I would need to add breakpoints and step though the STL code (similar to when debugging C++ or Java or similar). Is this possible somehow? Do I need external software to accomplish this?

yy1 Posts: 535 Rating: (112)	Dear Robert, you don't need external software, you can debug the code in the STL-editor. Open the block online. Verify, the your cpu uses 'Test Operation' (Menu 'Debug' -> 'Operation...' - depending on the cpu you can modify the mode in this dialog, or you have to change the mode in the hw-configuration of the cpu). Then you can set a breakpoint in the code by menu 'Debug' -> 'Set breakpoint' and activate it with 'Debug' -> 'Beakpoints active'. After reaching the breakpoint you can step through the code or resume the execution. Regards, yy1

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 12/19/2025 Posts: 3052 Rating: (1062)	and just to complement yy1's very nice post: be aware that using breakpoints will stop the PLC from doing its cyclicprogram execution, so do NOTdo it in a running Plant(this is somewhat obvious can can be overlooked in the "heat of the moment"). Robert Carlsson Posts: 20 Rating: (0)	Now something strange happened. I've been using breakpoints for a while, but now for some reason the "Set Breakpoint" option is diabled in the "Debug" menu. The operation is set to "Test Operation" and the block is in online mode. Anyone has any idea what caused this? I'll attach a screenshot of the menu, since many options are disabled.
