Installing Step7 on 64-bit Windows 7 Professional

tomearp Posts: 51 Rating: (3)	hello... wondering if anyone had any experiences good/bad at trying to install STEP7 on Windows 7 Professional (64-bit edition)? I tried to follow some instructions i found for doing it on 32-bit windows http://xuek.ru/eblog/2009/10/step7-at-win7/ but it did not work. i modified the .msi files to allow me to ignore the OS version, and copied the Common Files\Siemens folder to the appropriate location but the install process ditches with a pretty non-specific error (something along the lines of "not all programs were installed") not the end of the world if it's not possible as i have another machine i can get up and running for it, would just have been nice to get it working on my new laptop

MBenfield Posts: 1 Rating: (0)	I am currently running Step7 in the 32 bitXP shell provided by Microsoft for Windows 7. It installs and runs fine. There is a small update delay that I am attributing to the video integration. Hope this helps!

tomearp Posts: 51 Rating: (3)	cheers for that. have started playing around with that a little bit and it does seem to work quite well, bluetooth support seems slightly better than vmware. i'm keeping step7 in vmware for now though, if it ain't broke don't fix it

I am hoping to get a new system and getting a 32 bit operating system limits memory to 4GB so I'm really hoping for a windows 7 64 bit solution. I run several Siemens applications including Step7, Micro-Win, ProTool, WinCC, and WinCC Flexible. The XP Mode sounds really good if it works as all the overhead always running in the background that gets installed with the Siemens programs would only be on the virtual machine, not consuming all their resources otherwise. I tried the tech support but all I get is the company line "It's not supported". I'm looking at a fairly powerful machine with lots of memory so it should be able to handle the virtual machine Ok.

tomearp Posts: 51 Rating: (3)	well i run it in VMware Workstation and it works perfectly. i have not tried in XP Mode, but I have played around with XP mode a bit, using it to run some other software that's not Windows 7 compatible and it does work quite well. obviously XP mode is free, VMware isn't (and you would need a separate copy of XP to install on a VMware virtual machine) but it has other features which may or may not be useful to you

My CP-5511works on some machines and not others. To load some software you have to use VNC to connect to the virtual machine because the software will not install from remote desktop. The network has to be setup as a seperate connection not NAT mode. And remember support services will not help you in this configuration, but it works!

In case of NAT mode you should activate DHCP on the VM network card. Best regards, Hristo Mihalev
