Another solution is to use HW interrupt modules like 6ES7321-7BH01-0AB0.
And in HW configuration activate the check marks for the inputs you want to use in HW interupt. See the attched picture.
Then, make your logic (here in your case the counting) in OB40.

Also note that compact CPUs offered by Siemens have integrated I/Os and you can use the hardware interupt option using these inputs

I am currently looking at counting pulses from a pulse transmitter, using a digital I/O card,
couldI do this by accessing the process data directly using peripheral addressing?

The pulse transmitteris capable ofoperating up to a1khz frequency.

I really just need more clarification on how peripheral addressing works, and how fast.

Any insight/advice would be greatly appretiated.
