I have worked with S7-300 PLCs and I have mounting PLC modules (analog, digital) with black connector on back of the modules. I wored with them without really thinking about it. What is transfered through those connections and where I can learn more? Thanks

This can be parameters to let the module function, but also the Inputs and Outputs are transferred. Every module also has current consumption from backplane. Hope this helps, Best regards, Wizard

Hi Pandiani, There are also activ backplain modules, then the black connector is thrown away and a busmodule is then placed instead of it. That Busmodule is always 8cm width and you have to put two 4cm modules on that busmodule. With that BM you can swap IO also when the CPU stays in RUN. This is most used in Proces installations with ET 200Mwhere you don't want to switch of the hole installation when a module have to be replaced. [;)]

From S5 onI was interestied in how the backplane bus works and details about it. Basically S7 300 andall ET200 family remote I/O use the same peripheral bus concept that was copied from S5 95/100 family. Siemens added communication k-bus as well (MPI). So if you open an 300 CPU (old one) you will see a microcontroller C165,ASPC2 ProfibusASIC (DP versions CPUs)and some flash/ram memory, RTC etc. New ones are about the same thing but wafer form glued on the same silicon.CPU 300 runs PXROS OS from HighTec. The backplane bus consist on 15 pin wire spit bus where uper part is an asynchrony full duplex serial communication line running at 5MHz that is P-BUS. Logic behind the protocol is of course "proprietary" but essentially is a multiplexed protocol that addresses master-slave every card based on the slot number. It can be addressed up to 32 cards (with IM module). It is capable to read/write P addresses PIW/PQW or Data Records. The lower part of connector is K-BUS (MPI) an RS485 running 187.5 Kbps. Dec

DavidBrown Posts: 975 Rating: (9)	As I understand it : the mpi-connector on the cpu and the the communication modules on the rack (f.i. an ethernet CP) are linked to the same K-bus. So, a panel connected to MPI could be a bottleneck for the the ethernetcard on the rack talking to the plc? And if the panel was connected to profibus it would not directly be a bottleneck for the ethernetcard?
