projjwal Posts: 46 Rating: (0)	Is anybody there with experience of connecting laptop to S7-300 MPI port using non siemens generic RS485 to USB converter?Forum says that only pins 3,8 & 5 of RS 485 are required(but siemens documentation shows pins 4 & 9 as well). If this is true and if USB converter creates virtual com port in PC then a single converter I think should work for S7-200,300,400 and for HMIs as well!! Please comment If the adapter uses true USB port then some datalink layer protocol conversion must be there at adapter level because as I read somewhere USB specifies not only physical layer, but datalink layer and loosely application layer too(appliation layer protocol conversion is not necessary here because on both sides it is MPI). I have no idea about datalink layer/media access of siemens MPI on RS 485. I also read MPI is an applicaion layer protocol, but some form of media access should be there when so many nodes are on RS485 in an MPI network.

IBN-Service Posts: 8946 Rating: (1000)	my opinion: You will never be successfull with any generic RS485 adaptor, because MPI and Profibus use a "special" protocol, basing on RS483 physic.

On page 4-4 But do you know description of converter. Instead of looking for descriptions of it - cheaper alternative in USA. Also china market will surprise you with prices and quality. this is joke. projjwal Posts: 46 Rating: (0)	True I need a cheaper solution for connecting laptop to S7-300 & OP77A atleast for time being, but more important is things about MPI/PPI bothers me like OP77A has one MPI/Profibus DP interface - IF 1B but USB/MPI cable doesn't work with it I need a USB/PPI cable as per siemens documentation. WHY? can somebody explain please

projjwal Posts: 46 Rating: (0)	well, I need to download/upload/monitor ladder with s7-300/300 using step7 basic & upload/download configuration from/to OP77A like graphics based HMI using prosave/wincc flex. I am confused what to pickup for connection a CP5512 OR one USB/MPI for s7 and one USB/PPI for OP77A? 2 USB PC adapters or 1 CP module which one will be right choice in my case. Cost is main concern here. Our plant has no such MPI/profibus netwok, standalone PLcs are connected to their dedicated HMIlike so many isolated PLC-HMI pairs. I am not familiar with CP but I can manage. Need help

You can configure5 it as profibus or MPI protocol. I have CP5512 card for service call and i find it very usefull.
