I have few questions, Is this is the first time are you trying to communicate with the CPU with your laptop. Is your communication cable is ok, what is the message are you getting for communication failure. Is there any continous blinking of Led's in CPU, means is your CPU is in run mode without any error. Have a checked the Set PG/PC interface. Is your cable is working with other PLC's. Try with less baud rate in communication.Try to communicate through the ethernet CP if it is available in your CPU rack.Try with another communciation cable.

PC adapter USB(6ES7972-0CB20-0XA0)take its power from the MPI port of the CPU or Profibus if you connected it to profibus. Please let us know if the leds of the PC adapter lit when you connect it to MPI port or not. I mean here the two leds of Power and MPI. The third led lit when you connect the USB cable to your PC. As your CPU have a DP port, try to connect to it via Profibus. And in Setting PC/PG interface, select PC adapter (Auto) or PC adapter (Profibus).

If just the MPI - port of CPU is not working, you may try the profibus port. Also you canperform a backup of MMC - card.
