The distance between PLC & HMI Is about 50 Mtrs. So please suggest that how could I extend the cable from PLC to HMI if I am using PC/PPI cable? If I extend for RS-232 side then it would not be good idea. If I extend RS-485 Side Then how much pin should I use & how much max distance it could cover? Please reply.

This is the same medium as for Profibus, so no problems for 50 meters. Just I recommend to use profibus cable with profibus connectors.

I have to communicate HMI to PLC through PC/PPI Cable. So it will not work with only 2 Core of Profibus cable. I have already studied for that & I came to know that I have to use 4 Pin Signals for RS-485 in this application as below: Pin-2 ---->24 V Return (RS-485 logic ground) Pin 3 ----> Signal B (RxD/TxD+) Pin 7 ----> 24 V Supply Pin 8 ----> Signal A (RxD/TxD--) I just want confirm that is it OK or not? Or some other pin I have to use? And what should be max length for this cable work without any signal loss?

Helmut_13 Posts: 2930 Rating: (432)	Hi, at the RS485 side repeatermay work. both sides on one repeater can be up to 50m concerning the ProfibusDB standard. I don't know how the HMI is communicating to the PLC. If it use ASCII, then some of the repeater with auto-detect-baudrate may not work. This kind of repeater requires a ProfibusDB sign to detect the right baudrate. If ASCII is used between HMI and PLC then the ProfibusDB sign will not be created and so the repeater can not detect the baud rate. Other option is to use a Siemens Panel because by default ProfibusDB is used for the communication and up to 50m is default. No ASCII is used. So it will work without any additional HW. Hope this helps

Only question what cable to use ? Normally all standard RS-485 cables are 2 wires. You need to choose correct wire for extension. If you just take simple 4 cables without shield and no twisted pair then its not good.... Try ethernet cable. It should do the work only that it is too thin...

What I want to do is, I am using PC/PPI cable for the communication from PLC to HMI & distance between PLC to HMI is around 50 Mtr & that much length is not available for Siemens make PC/PPI cable. So I have to extend cable from RS-485 side. For that I am using 4 Pins which has been mentioned above. I hope now it is clear to all. So for that I hope 50 Mtr distance will be OK.

Well, if you could fing HMI with Profibus-DP or Ethernet then everything could be more simple. If you take Profibus-DP, you could buy additional Profibus-DP slave module of PLC and use profibus cable. The same is with ethernet. Use ethernet module and you have option up to 100 meters.

I recommend ethernet cables : shielded twisted pair cables . we use it previously to carry many signals ( like VGA ) for long distance.
