Ex modules are intended to be mounted inside hazardous areaswhere there is possibility for explosion because of the availability of flammable gas in the air, so if a module outputs a tiny spark, the whole place could go down Failsafe modules and programming blocks are certified for failsafe operation and that's mainly intended for critical processes where double checking for instruments and output signals is essential.
