Hi, no, you cannot upgrade the firmware from v1.6x (Performance 1) to v2.x (Performance 2), as the hardware is completely different. The CUPM (Performance 2) has much faster CPU, bigger memory etc. Functionally however, they do pretty much the same. The firmware versions are not compatible on each others boards. You are correct about the board codes, see Function Diagram 517. These are read only values that the firmware displays depending on which boards are fitted. It may be possible to upgrade your drive "a little". For example, your drive may have been supplied with v1.63, now you could upgrade this to v1.66.06. These later versions generally contain bug fixes and various other improvements. After you have backed up your parameter set, you can upgrade the P1 firmware as detailed in the "READMEMC.pdf" file found in the firmware download here:MASTERDRIVES Firmware V1.66.06 for MC-Compact and MC-Compact-Plus Regards, Graeme
