It seems there is no easy way to download the latest firmware version for every PLC that is there.. or maybe I am missing the best method.

how can I download this firmware version, where is the download link?

Nope, maybe I explained wrong, I need the firmware version to update my S7-1200 not the hardware catalog in TIA .

So there is no easy way to find the latest firmware update via the product support page it seems, you will always have to have the trouble in 2 steps 

1- knowing what was the latest update number

2- knowing were to download it

you can see your firmware of cpu through web server pic below attach.

after that you can search latest cpu firmware through Siemens support website and compare firmware you looking on site with you cpu s7-1200 if latest firmware available then download and update you s7-1200 cpu though web server firmware update option.

Here you can't update to Version FW V4.x , this is not possible!

So please check yourself the information you provide to other people !
