I probably don't go into depth with the commands as I should. I have found more info: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/List_of_Wi-Fi_Device_IDs_in_Linux
The page is very good as it shows most cards and what kernel they are supported USB and PCI. the command "lsusb" will show USB devices and their id. the command "lspci" will show PCI devices, "lspci -n" will show the id for those. Down the bottom of the page they show a workaround for usb_stick/cards not supported:
