Hi, In my opinion ProfiBUS is more reliable than ProfiNET because ProfiNET is easier to hack than ProfiBUS. |

Hello, Chech out the attached file which is an extract from siemens manual for your information. As per my knowledge if you are using an H system with distributed I/O, it would be better to go with profibus since in the case of profibus configuration you have two IM 153-2 cards(in case one fails the other is still active) whereas in the profinet configuration with IM-153-4 HF with two ports, if the IM card fails, the network will be broken and the the whole redundancy will be lost. (am not sure whether there exists a solution for this... but as per my understanding it is so) AttachmentMedia Comparison.pdf (169 Downloads) |

Hello Everone,
What does the term reliable mean?Do you mean resistance to to noise immunity?! I'll assume you are talking about Profibus DP (Not PA) against Profinet. I've asked this question before to Siemens guys whether RS485 based networks (E.g. Profibus DP) are more immune against noise when compared to Ethernet based networks. The answer (not my answer) was that both are strong enough if they are installed according to guidelines and standards. I can tell you that I've seen both falling down due to bad installation and also wrong configurations. Both are used in drives application which means they are quite fast and quite reliable. Still the RS485 gives you more segment lengths without repeaters and more and more with repeaters but on the other hand you will have to decrease the baud rate of the profibus network and your network may suffer from some sporadic failures (again this will happen in bad design and as usual with bad installation). On the other hand Profinet gives you faster update rates (faster baud rate) and a huge flexibility in network architecture but most probably with the aid of industrial Ethernet switches. Probably wrong. Industrial Ethernet networks should be protected with some VPN and firewall devices if they ever have connection to the world outside plant(Internet). Please, check the world ofindustrial security. As long as they don't have this connection then it's Ok. Don't ever think that Profibus is against hijacking. Please, read aboutSTUXNET. No your understanding is not correct. You are right about the 2-IMs but in case the IM fails, the network will not be broken and the redundancy will not be lost. Please, checksystem redundancy. Best regards, H-H |
