SCALANCE X208 Question

beserb Posts: 52 Rating: (4)	Hi everyone, I have 5 PLCs (S7-315) and I use 3 SCALANCE X208 for communication. All PLCs have CP 343-1 module. I prefered bus topology and my network is something like below: PLC1 >>> Scalance 1 Scalance 1 >>> Scalance 2 Scalance 2 >>> PLC 2, PLC 3, Scalance 3 Scalance 3 >>> PLC 4, PLC 5 I'm extremely novice about network structures (and olsa Scalance module) and I have some basic questions: 1- All of the Scalances' RM leds flash. According to manual this means "the redundancy manager has switched over, the ring is interrupted". Does that mean the topology is supposed to be ring? Do I have to disable the redundancy manager in order to form a bus topoogy? 2-Conceptually,I consider Scalance as a standart ethernet switch. I think there shouldn't be any order or priority in ports. However, I noticed that the port numbers affect the communication between the Scalances and CP modules. For example, when I use port P3 of Scalance 1 and port P5 of Scalance 2 there is no fault signal. In contrast, port P4 of Scalance 1 and port P1 of Scalance 2, Scalance 1 goes to fault (red led lit). Same thing happens for CP modules also. I have finally configured a fault-free network by trial and error but I want to know if there is a priority, order or sequence between ports. 3- When I observe the Scalances via Step7 "display active nodes" option, I see that some Scalances show IP in the name and some shows MAC address. This is also related with the ports I used. When I use P6 of Scalance 1 it shows MAC address and when I use P3 it shows IP address. I don't think that it is an important subject but I'm curious about the reason. I have read the manual but couldn't find answers for my questions (if I have overlooked, sorry). Any help will be appreciated :)

jklm Posts: 1742 Rating: (309)	Hello, Because we do not have your project and your settings, it is not so easy to explain with certainty what you describe. So here some general points. In the next I will refer to the manual: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/19348646 You can configure X200 switches using Web based Mangement only, or you can decide to integrate the switches in the HW config of the PLC. The second method implies that the switches become IO devices and that certain parameters being set via de PLC (acting as IO controller). The second method allows also to picture the topology of the network switches included in Step7. See chapter 9 of the manual. Depending on your choice, some settings must be done on the right place. For question 1) Having a ring is not mandatory. You're free to have one or not. Having a ring increase the reachability of end devices when a link in the ring is broken. If you don't have a ring, it make sense to deactivate the ring redundancy mechanims (to avoid error dispays and unnecessary test frames). Can be done in the Web interface (menu switch ==> ring). If the switches are integrated, settings are done in the Tab "Media redundancy". Should solve the issue that RM is blinking. For question 2) There is no priority among ports. Two ports may have a specific role (acting as ring ports) if a ring is configured. But even then, this is not a priority. The "F" LED on the switches may lit if you have configured a topology in Step7 and the real topology is not matching the configured one. For question 3), i wonder if settings were made in the switch blocking the propagation of the discovery protocol DCP. See page 214. On the other hand, If the switches are integrated in the HW config of Step7, you must assign unique (Profinet IO) device names to each switch in the offline version of HWconfig. But these names must be also assigned to the switches by means of the function "edit ethernet node ==> assign name" of step7. In HWconfig the default setting is that the switches get their IP address assigned by the controller (can be changed). Check that these IPs are free. If you did the name assignment correctly, the switches should appear with their names in "accessible nodes". Switches that list only a MAC do not have an IP address yet (missing name, not configured by the controller, ...) This as a first attempt to clarify some points. May be you can give more information about what is configured. Did you start with switches in their default settings?

I have noticed that my problems were related with redundancy feature (I used redundancy ports mistakenly without knowing their characteristics). Now, in order to form a safer structure I have changed to ring topology. I have given static IPs to all Scalances. It seems that everything is OK.
