Dear All, I am new in studing this field, so dont be annoyed if I ask dumb questions please. First of all, I have some idea on PLC and Automation by all means.So, I started reading Hans Bergers "Automation with Simatic S7-300 inside TIA portal". However I came across with problems related terms. My first question is about addressing modules. How everything is set? For example, I136.0 and Q124.0. How are those letters (i.e I and Q) and numbers 136 and 0 called? Thank you in advance ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Hello Newbie; If you do not mind a comment: the books by Hans Berger are very instructive, but they may go deeper in detail than required by a starting programmer. Do not look for minute detils now, you will soon get lost (as in this case); try to look for How to do what is required for a good program, not Why or Why not... Eventually you will get used to the information and language of Siemens PLCs. As far as your question goes, I have tried to explain some of the concepts used by the book in this HWConfig extract. I have taken it from this manual, which you can look at for further information on the subject: SIMATIC Configuring Hardware and Communication Connections STEP 7 V5.5 https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/fr/en/view/45531110 Basically, when you setup a physical (real) PLC with real hardware, you place IO modules (and power supply, and CPU, and communication processors...) on the PLC rack at different positions (there are rules to follow, HWConfig wil prevent you from placing a module in a forbidden slot); each module occupies a "slot" on the rack. When you configure the hardware in your programming environment (Step 7 v5.5 in this case) you must place the selected I/O modules in the same order as they exist in the real rack. Note that if you are working with TIA Portal the hardware selection screens will look different, but the principles remain the same. By default, the CPU will attribute a base I/O address (or module start adddress) to the I/O modules in nthe software rack (in HWConfig) based on a simple calculation.based on the slot number and whether the module is digital or analog. In most cases you can select another module start address if you choose to, but very often you will keep assigned addresses. So try to use the hardware configuration of the programming software you use to setup your PLC configuration, you should be able to understand the basic concepts easily enough.
