Hello, i am an IT guy and i work at a machine shop specializing in aerospace. Now i have been getting complaints about our 840D PCU 50.3 machines not being able to open large programs in the editor. I have read into it and noticed that there are ways to allocate the memory differently in order to give more to different areas of the control (i dont want to go that route). I've also seen that you can buy something from Siemens that allows you to increase the memory 1 MB at a time. So i have a couple questions. 

1. I'm a little foggy on what exactly the NCU is. What is the NCU and why does it show in the program manager that i only have about 4MB of memory? Is the NCU a part of the computer or is it another system sepaerate from the computer? How much max memory do the NCUs generally have? Is it tied in with the amount of RAM the PCU has or is it a separate system entirely? 

2. I have a few different versions of the PCU 50.3. The majority have 512 MB of RAM while 2 have 1GB. Is it possible to add more RAM to the controls that only have 512? Will that solve issues of not enough memory? 

 Hi there, you need get basic idea about SINUMERIK --check the book cover I attached, Google the full name of that manual, download and read it, That is for 840D Power line, If you use 840D solution line, just add SL after the manual name then Google it. Both manual can be gotten from Siemens DoconWeb.

I can give you very short answer here--NCU stand for NC Unit--It is a industrial Computer--on this control card, it is integrated NCK CPU and PLC CPU and other related componets .NCU memory normally is use for store NC Programming for machining. it is limited --so Siemens has idea to run larger NC Program from ext. devices, such as HDD from your HMI(PCU50/PCU50.1)

For PCU50(.1)--it is another computer--we call it HMI, it has its own OS and HDD and memory.

It is easy to understand by your IT guys. It IS only normal computer in special metal case, it has everything normal computer has. You can make memory extension just like you doing it in you normal PC or Laptop--buy memory sub-modules --open the HMI case in the back of screen. --put memory modules into PC slots.

I did 2 or 3 cases for my customers memory extension for PCU50. not because they want to use large NC program, but because they want to the PCU50 running faster--you know what is mean.

same as if you PC has larger memory it will running faster. HOPE this will help a little

 Thank you for that. If i were to upgrade the RAM in the PCU from 512 MB to say 2GB, would that allow me to view the bigger programs that i currently cant through editor?

Honestly saying --I don't know or not sure. 1st the PCU 50 --what is the processor for it , it can manager 1G RAM?

2nd--I did not try to edit large size CNC program in HMI (PCU 50)

there is a similar topic just in 2 week ago, you can check answer there. and my tips is --using USB or network transfer big program out to ext. PC to read and edit.

Is it HMI Advance ?

 Can you answer in detail ? As I know PCU50 or PCU50.1 are both advanced HMI for sure.

( compare with PCU20) , you mentioned Aeditor.ini file, can you give the path or better description in which line to modify the program size for editor in HMI?

It has a celeron 1.5 GHz. Not sure if it could support more than 1GB
