yes this is possible.

For this purpose you have to do three steps:

Step 1: Make you USB flash drive bootable (make it non removable). For example you can do this with the comman prompt. Open cmd and dop the following steps: 

diskpart
list disk 
select disk [number of USB drive]
clean
create partition primary
select partition=1
active
format fs=fat32 quick
assign

Step 2: Burn the Example Image to the USB stick instead of the SD card

Step 3: Open the efi filesystem of the USB stick and change the the file "boot.conf. It is located under loader\entries (i.e F:\loader\entries\boot.conf).
