KD.. Posts: 25 Rating: (7)	In 'Simple' terms, Lets say you have four PLCs (PLC1, PLC2, PLC3 and PLC4) on network. In Open typenetworkthe cable will be connected from PCL1 to PLC2 to PLC3 to PLC4 In case network between PLC2to PLC3 fails then PLC1 will not be able to communicate with PLC3 and PLC4 and connection between PLC1 and PLC2 shall remain functional Now, to improve redundancy you will add another network between PLC4 to PLC1 and make PLC1 as Redundancy Manager (RM)(it is functionality of Ethernet switch with RM capability) This architecture is called Ring Network In this case if network fails between any of the PLCs, all the communication shallremain intact from other side of thering. This is called Ring Redundancy. Regards, KD...

Ton Verra Gold Member Joined: 4/20/2007 Last visit: 1/2/2026 Posts: 731 Rating: (43)	simple terms? you got multiple devices connected on a line. the last station will loop back to the first station. when you connect line in a circle, the trafic will go both ways, and reach the devices twice, from both sides. this will give error, since the device doesn't know what to do in the end and/or will answer twice. this is solved by putting a redudancy mananger somewhere in the ring. this will open the ring again. the RM will check if there is a break in the line somewhere, and if so, it will close the ring until the break disapears. I have been using a Scalance switch for this, very simple to set up.

But the colleague Aniketdidn't answer if this is what he needs. Scalance switches may also work with RSTP and other switches, like Hirschmann, also have other protocols such as MRP. All of them controls the "ring" redundancy. Mike
