For S7-400H you need 2 Sync modules for each CPU ( 4 for both CPUs). A didicated two places for Sync. modules is prepared in all CPU4x-H for Sync modules. It's a plugin modules. In other controller families no need for it. Hope this helps.

hdhosseini Diamond Expert Joined: 1/28/2009 Last visit: 12/29/2025 Posts: 6889 Rating: (1368)	That may you find by a simple search, but explains why we should have all 4 synchronization module intact for full redundant operation: Sync Modules in H CPU dmertens The redundancy synchronisation needs more bandwidth than one FO connection can provide, therefor there are 2 connections, this is in no way a redundant connection, if one of the two FO connections is interrupted the backup PLC will go to STOP. I mean you need to download program in one CPU only and for the II CPU it is auto synchronized. Regards. Vijay

The system supports hot--swapping of synchronization modules, and thus allows you to influence the repair reaction of the redundant system and to control the failure of the redundant connection without stopping the plant. · Distance between the S7-400H CPUs Two types of synchronization modules are available: Order Number Maximum distance between the CPUs · 6ES7960-1AA04-0XA0 10 m · 6ES7960-1AB04-0XA0 10 km Long synchronization cables may increase cycle times up to 10% per cable kilometer.
