Is it possible to use ordinary (normal) ethernet card instead of siemens industrial ethernet H1 in a HMI monitors S5 PLCs with WIncc 5?

Najafabadipour Regular Member Joined: 8/14/2006 Last visit: 6/11/2008 Posts: 25 Rating: (0)	Hi everybody, We have an old HMI system based on Windows NT 4 and Wincc 5 that monitors S5 PLCs. The system uses CP1430 communication cards in the PLC racks and CP 1413 in the PC side. It also uses a big star cuppler hub and many transceivers in its configuration. Our problem relate to upgrading the old PCs. They are working for many years and we decide to upgrade them. We also should use Windows 2000 or XP because many of new mother board and VGA drivers don't exist for Windows NT4 workstation operating system. Also the current communication cards in the old PCs are ISA model that doesn't exist on new PCs. The question exists are: 1. Can I use normal ethernet cards (the ethernet port exists on almost all pc motherboards today), with normal hubs and AUI to RJ45 converters (CP1430 only have AUI port) for upgrading the system? 2. What is the best upgrading solution for doing this task (upgrading PCs and network)? Many thanks before for your help. B.Najafabadipour

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (408)	Hello, well, as far as I know is it possible to use standard Ethernet Cards for WinCC too. There you will have to use the BCE license to use the Cards. The more important thing is the WinCC Version you will be able to use. For Win2K the version of WinCC V 5.0 + SP 2 can be used with W2K SP1 The Version 5.1 SP 1 and SP 2 can be used with W2K SP 4 (additional Fixes are required). Check the Entry ID 21327667 for this. J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (408)	Hello, I found the following information in the SIMATIC Update for PCS 7 V 6.1 ...the licenses for the Basic Communication Ethernet (BCE) are no longer included with the software as before, but included with the IL 40 S V2 BCE basic units. If SIMATIC PCS 7 V6.1 is not operated on these released basic units, individual Softnet licenses (order no. 6GK1704-1CW62-3AA0) must be purchased for all Single Stations/Servers not connected to the system bus via CP1613. If I use an AUI to RJ45 converter (same as what I found infollowing link http://www.alliedtelesyn.com/products/details.aspx?141) then can I use an ordinary switch hub (or simple hubs) instead of the star cuppler hub? I believe you can use this software to communicate via an ordinary network card and you don’t need additional license[:D]. I am sure this works in WinCC V6, but in WinCC V5 I think in worth to test before ordering additional software. Best Regards, Mehrnoosh
