how to stop a motor by using MM440?

DS SURESH KUMAR Bronze Member Joined: 4/17/2012 Last visit: 8/30/2024 Posts: 474 Rating: (10)	Dear Experts, I am using the 30H.P motor it is rotating at 30Hz(40 RPM approx) by using the MM440. when i need to stop suddenly it is showing F 0002. I adjusted the ramp up and down times but it still shows the fault, please give some ideas to solve this.what about regenerative and flying brake system. can i use this for this application.

Vithani Platinum Expert Joined: 7/8/2009 Last visit: 8/5/2024 Posts: 1976 Rating: (477)	Well, Looks like your Load is having high inertia In this kind of condition, whenever you try to stop Motor within defined ramp down time, your Load pulls motor and thus it works as a generator and gives Power back to the drive which ultimately going back and increase DC bus voltage result in to F002 What to do? Simple Solution is use of Breaking Resistor. What it will do? It will dissipate this extra energy received from Motor and nullify extra voltage in DC buse. Dissipation to the Resistor is control by Inbuilt chopper in MM440 So I suggest you to go for appropriate DBR to solve your Problem How to select Breaking resistor? Applying OFF2 and then sudden brake will avoid F002 but your equipment will broken due to mechanical shocks Your Load is having high inertia which drive can not control without DBR itself shows very high mechanical impact so please DO NOT USE OFF2 with SUDDEN BRAKE Regards Devesh

If you need to stop rapidly, external braking resistor may get you part of the way. Replacing the drive with a different drive with regen capabilities will help a bit more. Adding a physical brake to the load, or in some way perhaps a pneumatic assist that engages air on drive OFF2 command may get even further. It all depends on how fast you need to stop. If you can put in 30 seconds for the ramp down time, does your drive stop the load without faulting? If 30 seconds works, does 15 seconds work? If 15 seconds works, how about 10 seconds? To get better than 10 seconds with a high inertial load and no external braking resistor or external stop assist device may be difficult witha MM drive. I use a G120 30 HP drive and it starts VERY fast, but stop times are about 5 times longer than ramp up times and my G120 has regen capabilities. Others drives we use are the S120 with regen and they start and stop very quickly. As with many things, the more costly, the better performance.
