Hi I am relatively new to PLC's I have acquired an S7-1200 (1212C AV/DC/RLY). I have also bought an SM 1223 DC/DC expansion module with 16 digital inputs and 16 digital outputs. I am running TIA v14 and I have got the PLC up and running had some issues with running the software on windows 10 but got it sorted by running as administrator and setting to run via windows 8. Well anyway I’ve got the PLC running programs and turning on and of outputs and decided to try plug in the expansion module and added it in TIA Portal however when I compiled and downloaded, it caused an error making the red-light flash on the CPU. There are no lights showing what so ever on the expansion module. I think I have everything connected correctly but the error on TIA is saying Hardware component removed or missing. Under the Help section it says " A hardware component has been removed or cannot be addressed. Check the power supply especially for stations with a self-assembling back plane and power segments. Resolution: Connect/plug the hardware component. Check the power supply."  I have no idea what’s going on I have taken 24v from the CPU power supply and plugged into L+ and M on the top row of terminals. Can someone please help.

do you connect right the SM-modul to the CPU?
It's not enough when you supply the remote module with 24V.

Your error looks like a missing connection between your CPU and your SM-modul (bus-connector).

Please look at this manual.
There you can see at page 65 how you should installing a SM-module.

Yes I have connected it as shown in the manual to the CPU.

You say 24v isn't enough, What should it be? it says 24v on the diagram on the front beside L+ and M with an arrow pointing downwards into the module.

I was also getting an error in TIA that the module may be faulty so replace if necessary, the unit might actually be faulty.

Give the chaps something to check. Please take a photo (of the physical wired connections) and publish the JPG here.
