For sure it's the best book for me. I've got the 6th edition from 2012. It's not only STL and SCL. It's about how things work, it's about how blocks are called,  it's about how blocks are working, it's about SFBs, about how timers work, it's about bits, bytes, PROFINET, PROFIBUS and all that stuff. All clearly explained and on his webside you can download some example blocks.

You will have no regrets.

Second - I have seen and (mostly) read those manuals - unfortunately I dislike reading large documents on the screen - I prefer paper - I'm a traditionalist in this matter ;)

With a Berger - Book you can do nothing wrong.

My first one (Step5) is nearly 20 years old,
an I still "hold it in honour".

Also you may find some example projects that come with Step7 Installation ("mixer" and "Drilling machine"). Have a look at "first steps" there you find some explanation for the sample projects.
