Hello, depending on the stiff mechanical coupling "two servo motor both with a pinion gear drive the same big spur gear" I would recommend Master "Positioncontolled" , Slave "Torquecontrolled".
Then you don't have the problem with one encoder for 2 TO's.

To twist Master and Slave at standstill, you can give an additional torquesetpoint permanent for the slave (e.g 5% from rated torque; exact value depends on your application)
