I am new to using PDM and am using the application within Step 7.

My aim is to use PDM to obtain device parameters etc in the field, our I/O cards are not HART compatible so this will have to be done in the field. 

I am using a peperl and fuchs usb-hart modem, i know it works as i am bench testing an instrument and can see its feedback using the software supplied with the modem through COM4 on my simatic field PG.

I have created a new project in step 7 just for this purpose, but I'm not able to select the required com port for communication.

Can anyone help?

sry somehow it's not clear to me what have Step7 something to do with this HART Modem. Can you pls again better describe what you want to do with this HART Modem and Step7? In case you want communicate your PLC with some Field HART devices you need probably have serial module attached to PLC, prepared own HART comm driver and then collect data from field HART device.

 I have Step 7 installed on my simatic field PG, integrated within that is PDM.

I cant communicate with HART instruments across the profibus network as the I/O cards are not compatible so am trying to connect directly to the instrument using an external usb to HART modem.

Ive created a separate project within step 7 to do this, however I don't seem to be able to set the coms link to the usb com port.

Any ideas as to why?

Maybe something in Mr. Powell's power point presentation on DPM V9 (attached) will help you out.
