I had the same issue described here. I tried all of the suggestions and they did not work.

I decided to try and install SQL Server 2016 manually from \Install\InstData\SQL\SQL2016STDSP2\setup\setup.exe. This gave me an error that the install file for SQL 2012 client could not be found.

I then ran the file here \Install\InstData\SQL\SQLAddOns\media\x64\sqlncli.msi to install SQL 2012 client manually which completed successfully.

Then I went back and installed SQL 2016 Standard manually and picked just the Database Engine Services. (I am not sure if this needed to be done or if I could have tried installing WinCC again)

Lastly, I installed WinCC as normally tried before and it succeeded.

Hopefully this helps someone else.

I had the same problem with WinCC SQL Server 2016 SP2 installation, with my Windows 10 (20H2) build. Later i found the version of Microsoft Edge Browser was outdated (which comes with windows 10 build by default). Install the current version (v86.0.622.56+ or higher) to correct the error.

To this end, open the "..." menu in Edge and select the menu entry "Help and feedback -> About Microsoft Edge". This will automatically start the update process. Afterwards, perform a restart.

This works only for Windows 10 (20H2 Build).

you just need to uninstall the previous version of sql server and try again .

I've had the same problem, didn't have anything to do with Edge.

Turns out, "Compression to save disk space" was active on the c-partition (brand new IPC527G), deactivated that (took almost 2 hours) and everything worked fine after.

Strange that Siemens delivers a PC that can't handle it's own software straight from the box 

Hello, this method worked for me.

I ran the setups as described and found out, that i had a other version of the "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client" installed which blocked the setup. I deinstalled this version of the Native Client from my computer and reinstalled the Native client from the path "G:\InstData\SQL\SQLAddOns\media\x64\sqlncli.msi". 

Then I started the SQL Server 2016 Setup from the path "G:\InstData\SQL\SQL2016STDSP2\setup\setup.exe" and just have chosen the Database Engine Services from the setup wizard.

Installation failed - but the log files said, that I have a newer version of "Microsoft SQL Server Data-Tier Application Framework (x86)" installed, which led to the fail of the installation.

I deinstalled this Framework from my computer and ran the SQL Server 2016 setup again - this worked!!!

After that, I started the WinCC 7.5 SP2 setup again and it finished without problems.
