Ground Fault detection 611D Spindle Module

TomGWarrior Posts: 14 Rating: (0)	Hi all, new here. I'll probably get flamed for improperly posting this question in another forum, but hereit is again. We are running a high speed, liquid cooled spindle motorfrom a611D 200ASpindle Module (part of a paralell kinematic 5-axis robotCNC machine). The spindle motors have the potential to leak coolant internally, and a ground fault condition occurs, but there is no alarm/fault indicated on the HMI (840D control), and the spindle is allowed to operate, feeding voltage disturbances back onto the 480V power distribution bus which interferes with other CNC equipment in the area. Added to this, the motor windings will eventually fail, causing upwards of $18,000 of repairs. Does GF sensing/protection exist for the Simodrive 611D system, or does anyone simply know of an 80A GFCI breaker which could be installed on the line side of the drive to shut the system down in event of a ground faulted spindle (less desirable as it would be prefered to do a controlled shut down). Dave Posts: 271 Rating: (29)	Hello TomGWarrior, You've given some indication as to what you're observing and concerned with. What is probably the cause of your problem is a misunderstanding of the use of Simodrive 611 drives. Important: The mains feeding the Infeed Module must bea wye-connected grounded neutral configuration. The grounding of your system must be done in accordance with the Simodrive 611D Configuration Manual (found at www.automation,siemens.com/doconweb). If you do not have a wye-connected grounded neutral feeder, you must use an isolation transformer which does have a wye-connected grounded neutral secondary and the center tap of the wye needs to be connected to a new ground at the machine. This will most likely solve your problems. The Simodrive 611 drive system will identify ground faults and it will shut the drive down. Hope this helps...

TomGWarrior Posts: 14 Rating: (0)	Thank You Dave, Your comment on proper installation with the isolation transformer sounds like the key here, we have several automated presslines in the plant with multiple 611 drives, and they came with a dedicated "substation", I'm sure of which is to accomodate the reccomended requirements. Sanjoy 4m India Posts: 55 Rating: (2)	My experiance say - Iso. Transformer is a MAST for Drive/CNC where same Feed Bus supply the Press shop, Welding shop etc. current surge and voltage surge may kill drive/ CNC. Here, in India - usually we use Iso Trafo. and Filter both. Regards,
