Drives_Coach Posts: 133 Rating: (13)	Using the Control Panel in the STARTERprogram on your PC you can control and monitor S120 drives using CU310 orCU320 control units. I have done this using the Profibus and Profinet interfaces along with the serial interface on theRS232 port with a nullmodem cable. This scenerio is used more for commissioning than standard operation. Normally at least an HMI panel like TP170 configured as a Class 2 master would be connected to the drive in normal operations. I havehowever seen where an engineer running Simatic Net and OPC server made his PC look like a HMI and controlled the S120 drives directly with no HMI or PLC.

Drives_Coach Posts: 133 Rating: (13)	Profibus and Profinet are open protocols from the PTO organization. The RS232 port does not really support anything other than STARTER and the AOP30 operator panel. Again from anyone of these three you can control the drive (stop/start, speed reference, position reference) using the control panel in STARTER. But Iask again are you wanting to do this just for commissioning the drive or for normal production operation. For normal production operation I would use an HMI, AOP30, or as I mentioned in the last example an engineered solution using OPC server and SIMATIC Net which makes your PC look like a PLC rack. Profibus or Profinet aremy preferred communication protocols with SINAMICS S120since they are fast, proven, open, and very little application limitations.

tmatzen Posts: 11 Rating: (0)	Hello, I found your post regarding control of the S120 drive directly from a PC interesting because I am trying to do exactly the same. I have a setup with a S120 drive and a profibus connection to a PC where I can control it using the control panel from Starter. My goal is to make a set of functions in Matlab from Mathworks so I can control the drive from Matlab. (enable/disable, set reference points like speed or torque) I am currently following the manuals "Commissioning PC Stations" and "Simatic Net Industrial Communication" to get more knowledge about the Simatic system and Profibus communication. I have the OPC-server commissioned but when I use the OPC-scout I am not able to see the parameters of the drive units. The Simatic NCM PC software conflicts with Starter duing the install, so I do not have Simatic NCM PC installed which are used in the manuals mentioned above. I would appreciate some hints how to proceed.. should I uninstall Starter and install NCM? or how may I continue without NCM PC? Kind regards Torben Aalborg, Denmark
