for communication outside a single subnet, a router is needed. You need the so-called "Layer 3" functionality. Per definition a switch is a "Layer 2" device and therefore not suitable. Some managed switches (e.g. SCALANCE XC-200, SCALANCE XP-200) also provides a small set of "Layer 3" functionality. Maybe in your case this would be enought, but this depends on your requirements.

Objective: I need to exchange data between S7 300 and S7 1500 PLCs only. That's it. 

Addition to the Layer 3 router (X200, X400 etc ), can I use CP 343-1 OR PN/PN Couplar? Please advise!

for data exchange between two PLCs in different subnets, a SIMATIC PN/PN Coupler might be a good solution. When using IO data only, up to 1,440 bytes can be exchanged.

A additional communication processor would allow the PLC to be connected to a additional subnet. So the PLC can be put into the subnet of the communication partner to enable "Layer 2" communication.
