I need to find out if DMG CTX 3000TC machine has any OEE related type of data (by OEE i mean 3 parts - quality data - good or bad counts, availability and throughput). My understanding is that in CNC systems there are 3 levels of the software and data architecture:

1. 840D system which is basis for various OEMs
2. OEM level eg. DMG or Hermle adds there own software on top of layer 1
3. Customised layer bespoke to each solution which contains bespoke mapping from various memory areas to the datablock area.

Can anybody please advise me (or guide me to the documentation):

1. 1 how much OEM related data can i expect to find on the level 1 (840D) and level 2 (DMG)
2. I will be connecting to the PLC (either via MPI or ethernet - whatever available) to check the datablocks but if needed i can try to set up up OPC (i assume there is OPC sinumerikmachine switch opc server).  Does OPC connection gives me access to all the data (includes system data) on DMG machine?
3. Does DMG CTX 3000TC machine use OPC da or OPC UA?
4. Any other practical advise?

Many thanks for reply - you are right i should check for the specifics on DMG in different forum.

However would you be so kind and give me some pointers how to connect to the PCU50 which is connected to that DMG Machine which is  10 years old. There is no PLC visible in the cabinet.

1 if there is PCU 50 can i assume that OPC DA connection might be possible?

2 Is there any other type of connection possible to the PCU50 - i had desperate attempt to search for PCU on the network - MAC address was displayed when browsing ethernet network in STEP7 but IP was 0.0.0.0. - i am not sure if IP should be set to some company network range

I will tell you about my experience with DMG machines (DMG50 ecoline, CTX 310 all with 840D sl).

As some one told here "DMG sell their machines cheap and make their money from service and upgrades".

2. Quite customized main PLC  program. If you look on operators panel you will see that  (hybrid of Heidenhain and Siemens MCP) :)

Standard password unlock OEM menu [Custom] which helps you deal with usual service task such as: lubrication, temperature compensation, toolchanger routines, selecting of measuring system without accessing PLC variables through MD or directly through PLC programing. All of this function available through DMG part of HMI program. It seems rather easy. But in same time adjusting of kinematic vectors is quite tricky task. DMG uses their own variables to define kinematic chain SCHW_DATA [11,0...5] (however they are linked with Sinumerik offset vectors, during power up routine values in this variables transfer to offset vectors) .

I can mistake, but as I have understood that you want to connect to the external PLC which distribute some I/O but the main PLC is built in NCU. Only thing you can do is to make backup archive of main PLC program. I dont know if it can be useful to open this archive with text editor trying to read this code like assembler code. 

Also I havend heard that DMG saves Step7 project on the hard disk or CF card.

In your situation I would try to make full copy of HDD (using acronis or ghost) and try to find there step7 project (maybe you are lucker) and OEM cycles.

1. I tried to connect to MPI but when using MPI cable there wo no LEDs lit and connections was dead.
2. IP address displayed as 0.0.0.0 which suggests in needs configuration in the Windows XP operating system which i should probably login during boot up by pressing some combinations of the buttons

Thanks for reply. My MPI cable was tested on PLC day before and proven good. When connected to the PCU there was no communication at all as if the interface was not enabled.

I am trying to understand how to connect from my Laptop (running any OPC DA client like WinCC) and retrieve data from the PCU 50. During my first visit i tried to use Simatic Manager/edit node option andS7-PC device was found but IP address diplayed as 0.

Would you please advise me on the following:

1. If i try to use OPC DA communication do i need to boot to the XP operating system on the HMI and set IP address which appears to be 0.0.0.0 . I assume the new address has to be on the company network range (as oppose to system network range which i should not touch)
2. Do you know if brownfield connector is more reliable than OPC DA - does it use different lower lever communication than OPC DA ?
