In my experience, RTD and TC modules either work, or they do not work.  If they do not work (and it is configured and wired correctly), they need a firmware update.  If no firmware update is available, they are not going to work, ever.

I have only had one RTD/TC module die.  I have had older firmware modules fail after updating firmware on the s7-1200 PLC.  Applying the latest firmware to those modules has always brought them back to full operation.

Once you have an RTD, connect it up directly to the module to verify the wiring schematics are going to work.

Which one?

There are many different variations like 6ES7231-4HA30-0XB0, 6ES7231-5PA30-0XB0, 6ES7231-5PA30-0XB0 and so on. All are SB1231.
