Not possible at this time. M1 Macs don't have Bootcamp, and can't run x86-64 VMs. You can run a Windows VM, but it is only the Windows on ARM tech preview, which TIA won't run on. Apples Rosetta 2 translation layer, which translates x86 macOS binaries to ARM, cannot run virtualization software either.

I really do not get why people are trying to use Macs for everything. If you work in the field of programming (PLC), you most certainly would not have Mac. Yes, i understand if you are a student and have no choice(actually you did have a choice, but made a really bad one).

There was a time when Macintosh was good and had capabilities that PC did not, nowadays it is a very expensive paper weight. But teens like it, cos its so cool and white. In the 90's you sounded like a professional if you had a Mac, sadly today first thing that comes in mind is thirteen year old girl. [snip].

Point is that why to make things harder and use equipment that is not suitable for the job. I bet i can cook my christmas ham in my washing machine, but i choose not to.

why would i want to use an intel i9 macbook which runs hot all the time uses a lot of power and costs 3500e while there is a 1400 macbook air which can run everything without a fan and has the best battery life on the market and enough horsepower to do it all? not even intel windows laptops come close at this price point at what you get at apple. its a better product and right now they are leading the arm field which is the future.some just like to buy the best thing they can buy when they buy it.... paperweight....

plus some people dont need all the io you probably need....

 the license manager is a 32bit process and it wont run until it is rewritten for 64bit.. its the only 32bit process that remains so

People have different needs and preferences, and if it makes someone happy to use a MacBook or a ThinkPad or some Linux laptop, then it's fine to let them be happy and get their work done.

 Very interesting! I knew ARM Windows had a translation layer for x86 compatibility, but figured there was no chance TIA would run well on it. How's your experience been so far on it?

I always work with VM's with TIA or any automation software, if those function without problem on MAC I stand corrected.

I would always prefer Linux over Windows but sadly most programs are designed for Windows and in my experience VM's with Win programs work best with Windows.

I like to separate my personal life from work, so even though I use Linux on my own computer, I'm happy to us Windows at work, it makes work life so much easier.

Far from trying to create a Mac vs PC debate - you clearly haven't used a MAC with baseless comments like that. I run a 2013 version MAcbook Pro - still a quantum leap from ANY PC I have on my desktop (I have 6) - so yeah - getting TIA portal working on M1 is topical. Nothing to do with looking cool - more to do with running cool.

Back on topic - I'm more concerned about peripherals - I never used Parallels but Fusion has never missed a beat with connecting to Profinet/MPI

Very interested if there is any input from Siemens on this - where is the bottleneck?

Which Version of Win10 are you using?

Win10 will always ask you to update to Win11 and Win10 is only downloadable via Uup-dump.

This topic is not to debate on which computer manufacturer is better, but to check on the status of tia on arm.

As another forum member already mentioned, arm is the future and apple is leading this race weather you like it or not. Combined with the fact that they run fast and cool and that newer versions of tia are becoming slower, many people are considering m1 or m2 for the job (me included).

Has anyone tried to run tia on windows 64bit on Apple silicon? Apparently this is possible (link below) however is it fast?

ps: people would argue that a fanless design is more suited for industrial applications which are usually more dusty and dirty in general. My current laptop's fan gets clogged all the time.

just thought to offer my impressions running Tia portal V17 on a macbook air m2. I am really motivated to get this working, since the new computer runs cool, quiet and consumes a fraction of the electricity of my 3 year old macbook pro intel core 9.

The tests have been done using Windows 11 22H2 (arm edition) and Tia Portal V17 inside a parallels VM. Why win11 22H2? Because it has IIS support for wincc unified.

a) No problem with installation. Default packages plus unified.

b) Problem with siemens openssl wrapper. Tia portal crashes when opening or creating new project. Completely useless at this point. Upon investigation, it seems that it crashes when a siemens dll tries to call openssl libraries (bio_free_all). Since this function does not seem critical, I patched this check so that the problematic function does not get called. This allowed me to continue testing but shows a nagging prompt because of the modified dll which is expected. If someone can find a better solution I would be greatful.

c) PLC Sim (s7 1200) - working properly.

d) WinCC unified (pc runtime) - simulation and download works properly

e) Download to a comfort panel (ethernet) - Fine

f) Download to an actual s7 1200 over VPN - Fine

g) License manager - Works fine. Used trial license to check. Did not check with actual license.

Overall speed is better than my 3 year old intel core 9, which is impressive given that Tia is actually emulated on runtime. The mac is fanless and remains cool.

This post is by no means a suggestion to use Tia on Windows arm as a production solution. It serves as to learn the feasibility status.

Again, I would really appreciate any better way to solve the only problem (b).

Thanks for your message. Indeed for the time being I have patched the signature checks. Not the most elegant solution but I am not using it for production anyways.

I don’t believe siemens would prioritize such a request since lets be honest windows arm is not even for sale yet. On the other hand i believe that if siemens compiled their apps for arm, they would be snappy again like the old days.

Again I cannot stress enough how enjoyable it is to use the laptop being completely noise free. Side by side with my previous macbook pro, I would say certain tasks are faster, others are slower. Overall perceived speed is the same. 

By the way, another limitation is the inability to use peripherals such as pc adapter due to the missing arm drivers.

Which encryption protocols are enabled on the VM?  They _should_ be configured with no SSL, and just TLS1.2 enabled (via Internet Options), and if you need to go further, there are registry adjustments (you can download and execute the required .reg entries to enforce TLS 1.2 on Win10).

I would recommend importing a settings file (create one from a running portal project on a functional v17 system) so it has no need for SSL at new project opening/creating.

Perhaps create c:\Automation on the VM, configured with full permissions to authenticated users, and in your settings file, have it point to c:\Automation for everything.

These are just thoughts / ideas / suggestions.  Not known to be functional solutions.  If you are able to "patch" the dll to skip the check, perhaps you can patch the calling code blocks that verify the integrity of the dll you patched so they accept it.

Instead, I'd probably submit a request for Support to Siemens with a link to this thread as well as your specific results.

To be frank, it's quite simple Apple makes "the best hardware" I am currently using a 2019 MacBook Pro and I am researching whether or not to upgrade to the M1 or M2 chip. I often tell people in the industry I use a Mac because... I close the Mac and open it and miraculously it turns back on unlike every other PC I've ever used ever. Fully integrated dictation, fully integrated read out loud be able to do something quickly without waiting for the hardware to decide to get out of its own way. Be able to force quit a program even though it doesn't want to close.  yes, I understand that he recently with windows 10 and I'm sure with windows 11 these things have gotten better but still, If I buy a PC in 2022 I will be buying another PC in 2023 they just don't last and they cost just as much if not more. also most PC laptops give you 1/3 of performance when on the battery to "save battery" macbook pro M1 Gives 100% performance on battery or plugged in.  It's kind of important when you're standing in front of a panel.  Also, updates, like come on every time I turn on a PC it needs some "critical" update And that update may or may not break every single thing that you've installed on it that's far.

Just so everybody understands I'm not saying that a MacBook Pro is the right piece of hardware but it is a good piece of hardware to use in the field. Yes, there are limitations in the software that are overcome by software. like choosing a PLC platform, Seamans doesn't have all the bells and whistles built into the hardware like some "Idec" but the software makes up for that and the siemens hardware is great. We usually choose the hardware that best suits our needs first and then deal with the software after that, granted with Seamans we get the best of both worlds and that's kind of why I choose Mac because it is the best hardware and the software will be there. I do think the M1 is a setback right now because Parallels hasn't quite got it figured out but I don't foresee that taking much longer

 been in the industry for 20+ years Used a mac as a daily driver nearly the whole time. Simply put it just works and they last forever. 

Also, Parallels is the VM and yes VM's are extremely handy because you can have a complete build of your exact engineering set up and not pollute some other build. 

Also, hardware usability and every time I open it it turns on and every time I open it it doesn't want to have a critical update.

In my browsers, there's almost always an option presented to translate a given page into the default browser's language.  When there is no visible prompt, suggestion, or option, I can copy/paste the page text and visit an online translator site which generally does a fair enough job for free (other than any presented ad content and collection of my online interests).

I finally managed to activate the Patch by installing Visual Studio, opening the patch and executing it.

After installation everything went fine. Communication with the PLC is ok. I use a LMP ethernet adapter that is recognise by Parallel and can be assigned directly to Win11.  

Just had a problem with ECatcher the tele service system from EWON but they have a solution for ARM environment on their Website.

WinCC Adv is also tested without problem it remains only the Unified to be tested.

So far so good.

the patcher now got a pull request to also fix the openssl file. so you only should need to run it and then Tia should run

I've just put in a Pull Request on this same repository which should make it a bit more flexible in regards to handling various TIA Portal versions (it will try to detect all the versions installed, and offer them all for patching, not just the v17 and v18 that the prior code supported).

It still only does the patching of the DLLs for the Code Signature, and the OpenSSL stuff.  And since I'm a Windows / Intel user, I can't test out the actual patched file behaviour.

It should make testing it against TIA Portal v19, as well as v16, v15.1, v15, v14, v13.... etc easier.

Ideally the github repo would be setup with a github action and runner to generate a 'Release', that would just have a zip file of the executable and bundled dependencies.  This would make it easier for others to use (i.e. they wouldn't need to compile it themselves).

Recently, I was impressed by the performance of the latest MacBook (M2), even when running on a virtual machine like Parallels. Windows ran much faster than my $2700 Lenovo X1C and the battery life was subjectively about three times longer. This difference is significant to me, and I believe that as other engineers become aware of such disparities, the number of engineers noticing them will increase rapidly.

The significantly lower power consumption for the same tasks between x64 (x86) and ARM64 architectures is an undeniable difference. I already perceive this as a shift in processor generations.

I feel it's necessary to make this request because I believe major companies need to spearhead the trend towards ARM support.

Official native ARM support in TIA Portal would be great. Battery life is a big deal when you can't find an outlet. 

I'm working on the latest Intel based MacBook (2019) with VM ware daily with TIA portal.  I can't wait until Siemens officially support ARM, that will be the point I will buy a new MacBook. The significantly lower power consumption for the same tasks between x64 (x86) and ARM64 architectures is an undeniable difference. I already perceive this as a shift in processor generations.

I feel it's necessary to make this request because I believe major companies need to spearhead the trend towards ARM support.

 I'm working on the latest macbook M4 Pro with Parallels Windows 11 ARM and TIA V17 and TI V18 without any problems so far :)

Connection to PLC with a small hub (I use it anyway for HDMI and so on) from Lenovo Plug&Play.

I just did a full V19 project on my Mac with M2 and with startup.

Compare to my old X86 (i7) MacBook Pro, it works faster and I don't need to charge very often. It's a real pleasure.

The only problem is that I still can't install the WinCC unified simulation because one windows function is missing in Win11 ARM.

Does anyone have a solution for this.

Dear Jochen,

I used your patch for TIAV18 and it works fine.

For V19 it was working immediately without patch

But for V20, the installation took several hours. It was blocked at the end for the system modification. When finally finished, it gaves some errors.

When creating a project TIA crashes. I installed the patch but it still crashes. The crash report indicates that some "objects" are missing.

Do you have any experience with TIA V20 on Win11 ARM?

Dear All,

In my previous post, I was explaining having problems to install TIA V20 on Win11 ARM.

I was using a DVD reader to install and it took more than 4 hours to install with errors.

I tried again with an external HD, it took only 30 minutes and didn't give any error.

It works fine without the need of a patch.

I remains only the problem of WinCC Unified simulation. I didn't try but I think it is unnecessary it won't work.

Hello, WinCC simulation works fine. Newer versions of Win11 have the missing MSMQ server features. V20 Unified Installs and functions correctly (both tia and runtime). Now if we could find a solution for accessible devices…

As you wrote that the functionality missing in win 11 arm is now available and indeed I managed to activate MSMQ. This was the condition to install WinCC Unified simulation. 

After installing it I had other problems but I suppose I will be able to solve it.

To see the available IP partner on the network, I use SIMATIC Automation tool. The basic version (free) is capable to list all the devices on the network even with Win 11 ARM. You can even modify the name and the IP address. It will generate an error but ignore it. The modification is done.

I'm experiencing the same thing, I can download or configure the program but I can't scan for any devices

I installed Siematic Automation Tool on my macbookair with M4 chip, but to scan I still need to select the physical NIC of the computer, and after selecting it and clicking on the scan icon I still can't scan any device, may I ask how did you do it to scan the device?

I have Macbook Air M3 with Parallels 20.3

I managed to install tia 12 only step7 on windows 10 and it opens projects normally.

I also can't install starter 5.7 on windows 11

I wanted to add to this after a VERY big headache having finally upgraded my i9 2019 MacBook to a new M4 Pro. The only piece of software I couldn't get working was TIA V18, found this thread, but sadly the use of Github was over my head in an effort to get V18 working on the ARM version of Win 11 within Parallels Desktop 20.

Solution- downloaded V18 SP5 (I was on SP2 or 3 previously) and it has fired straight into life. I do get the red CPU maxed out indicator when opening an HMI setup screen but otherwise it seems as quick, if not quicker, than on my old Intel based laptop.

Small edit- I did have another headache with TIA being able to see the PLC or HMI when going online. Windows needed new/ updated drivers for my ethernet adaptor (Realtek gbe USB) which windows update found automatically. Using .cmd I then verified I could ping the devices. 

The last change that helped was to alter the dropdown for "Show all compatible devices" and change to "show all devices with the same address". Following that it is 100% working and in 6 hours use/ monitoring and loading I have used less than 30% battery! 

I have done several test and finally I think It can't work because Profinet protocol are not (so far) available for ARM architecture

I used MacBook M4 hardware; Parallels Deskto or VMware Fusion or UTM for virtualization; Win11-ARM- 24H2; TIA Portal V20.

The whole installation process worked fine, TIA Protal works fine, execution speed is good but it is not possible to comunicate with PLC ( no discovery, no transfer configurationor programs, no online functions etc)

This make sense , because the Profinet protocols have not been installed; with control panel open the ethernet interface and check installed network protocols (properties):  PROFINET IO protocol (DCP/LLDP) PROFINET IO RT-Protocol V2.3 / SIMATIC Industrial Ethernet (ISO) / PROFINET IO RT-Protocol V2.0 …. they will not be in the list.

And so far it seems not to be remedy because the Profinet stack for ARM processor has not yet been developed.

Only one solution works but in my opinion not fast enough. Using UTM it is possible to “emulate” x86 architecture.

I created emulated VM, installing Win11-x86/64- 24H2, then installed TIA Portal V20. Profinet protocols has been installed by Tia installation process and everithing is working ( plc comunication as well ) …but slow, sometimes too much slow.
