Hi all,
on a SINUMERIK 840D sl: NCU 710.3BPN with PLC 317-3PN/DP I have two positioning axes with two Heidenhain absolute encoders, one rotary and one linear, connected to SMC20.

The rotary one is working well but the linear one rise the 25000 "Axis XX hardware fault of active encoder" even if I manually move the rotary axis (maybe some vibration, I guess).

I just disconnected the cable from SMC20 and connected to the Heidenhain diagnostic system and I'm able to read: incremental signal, position, endat data, etc..
So ... the hardware side (encoder+cable+connector) is apparently ok.

Just for test, I also checked the other encoder with same result.

Are there any parameters that I might have entered incorrectly creating this situation?

Hello,

There is no any parameter setting for hardware fault of active encoder fault. Please try by replacing SMC 20 in your case.

BTW is this running machine or new under commissioning? Have you configured encoder correctly, if you are modifying or commissioning? 

 New machine under commissioning. Encoder should be configured correctly, I've checked it many times. I'll try to replay the SMC20 in the next 20 mins.

After the SMC20 replacement nothing has changed.
I've attached a zip file with 6 screenshots. In details:

001: the drive commissioning ("CHANGE") with the SMC20 (2th encoder). The first one is drivecliq motor encoder.

002: encoder successful identified (resolution 20000 nm - correct)

003: same encoder info from another page

004: some parameters about the encoder (assigned to W axis)

005: others parameters

006: the axis assigment

AX6 (SP1) is the main spindle.

I've followed the same method to configure the rotary encoder (the working one).

Is your main spindle linear axis? Please confirm. If not, how you can configure linear feedback to spindle, i.e. rotary axis?

Spindle is rotary, axis SP1.
The 2nd encoder (the linear one) is assigned to the virtual axis W and it's linear.

EDIT: When I try to move the axis the encoder change it's quota but immediatly fire the 25000 error.

Please set 30200 of W axis = 2 (here I presume you have motor encoder+external linear encoder) & configure motor as well as external encoder parameters correctly.

1) PISCEAN 2010 thank you for you support.

2) I have a single motor drive with 1 motor (siemens with internal encoder) and 1 external linear encoder.
Motor and it's own internal encoder are assigned to axis SP1 (rotary spindle).
The external encoder is assigned to axis W, a linear axis without motor with:
MD30132 = 1 (for virtual axis)
MD30460 = 100H (bit 8 = 1 for positioning axis)

3) Even if the Heidenhain diagnostic tool said the encoder was good I had tried to replace the enoder and now the hardware fault error is disappeared (25000) but now, if I try to move manually the encoder I get the 25050 error.
If I try to increase MD36400 from 1 to 10, the quota doesn't change until the error 25050 come up again. With the error active encoder works well -_-

Do you mean to say, you are configuring single motor module for two axes? i.e. one motor with encoder for spindle axis & another axis W only external encoder linear without motor as  virtual axis?

If above is the case, it is not possible.

Yes. But I have about 20 similar machine working in this way ... only this machine is giving me problems.

Attached the screenshot with my configuration.

X1, A1, B1 and SP1 have drives and motor (X1+A1 DMM, B1 SMM and SP1 SMM)

C1, W1, OFS1 and OFI1 have no drives and no motors.

All the external encoders are configured as 2nd encoders on the drives and then are assigned to other axes.

C1 got 2nd encoder from B1
W1 got 2nd encoder from SP1
OFS1 got 2nd encoder from X1
OFI1 got 2nd encoder from A1

I apologize but I have difficulty in explaining this situation, but it's like the other machines.

I have no Starter project.
I've started from a similar machine, loading ARC, factory settings for drives and riconfigured all axis.

I have created a new Sarter project, connected to Sinumerik and downloaded and downloaded the online project. Do you want the project?

DB3x.DBX1.4 was 0 for both virtual axes. 

Now is working fine.

Hi all,
some news. I tried to replace faulty encoder with a new similar encoder with no parameters change. And all is working fine. The only difference is the lenght: the faulty encoder is 689680-08 (420mm) and the working one is 689680-04 (220 mm).

Heidenhain said: I have seen all the heidenain and Siemens encoder parameters and your tests: the encoder is working for me.

Siemens support said: I have seen all the CN encoder parameters and your tests: the encoder should work for me.

Both said: try a drive reset.

And after the drive reset, the problem persist.

Anyone can help me plz?

I have the same alarm that appears from time to time on two of my measuring head encoders. I have to reset the power every time the alarm appears.

after resetting the power the machine works very well, and after a while, the alarm appears again.

I have checked the encoder's wiring and grounding everything looks fine.

to disable this alarm I have to set MD36310 to 100, I didn't see the alarm again

the strange thing is that this alarm start to appear on many of our new machines and we don't know the root cause of it
