S7-1200 Profibus To ABB RPBA01

Choppy Regular Member Joined: 8/19/2008 Last visit: 4/9/2025 Posts: 13 Rating: (1)	All, I have several systems where i am using a CPU1214C with a CM1243-5 Profibus card to communicate to an ABB Inverter fitted with a RPBA01 Profibus card. These systems are installed on machines throughout the world. The issue I have, is that on two of the sites (in two different countries), that after a power cut / dip, the Profibus address in the ABB inverter has returned to default (the address is set by parameters, not rotary switch). I have spoken to ABB tech support, who have blamed the PLC for resetting the address. The PLC is powered through a UPS, so rides out any power dips, so my question is, has anyone come across this before? I have done systems a few years ago, where we have addressed units through the profibus, but that involved explicit messaging. I want to blame the ABB side, but wanted to fully discount the Siemens side before i go back to them

I have spoken to ABB tech support, who have blamed the PLC for resetting the address. ... Why is not using rotary switches? Sorry, I am just curious. What kind of ABB drive are you using? According to me it doesn't have matter because I have never seen that kind of bahaviour. But it is true I always used rotary switches... What is the situation if you switch off the power supply of the drive? Or if you diconnect the Master when the power is on? Best regards, Hristo Mihalev

The drive is an ABB ACS355 On our later machines we have moved to setting the address via the rotary switch as we have stopped sending a PLC engineer out for commissioning and it makes things easier to get the commissioning guy to look at a switch, rather than talk them through accessing parameters. I'm more interested in finding out about the inverter reverting to its default address and ABB telling me that the PLC is responsible The Inverter is not UPS protected so any power losses cycle the power to the Inverter. The machine we had this happen to, is in India and has had frequent power dips / changeovers to generator operation. In this instance i was online to it today when the Inverter defaulted on the Profibus address. I was online with the PLC, so know the PLC didnt power cycle. I've not tried disconnecting the Master from the Profibus, as we will not get into this situation.

Even it is going to default if loose master connection. But this is not a fault. Just make a trials which I mentioned above. Share with us the results. Best regards, Hristo Mihalev

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 9/4/2025 Posts: 3049 Rating: (1062)	Hello Choppy apart from the DIP switch based setting of a Profibus address, software based node address assignment is generally done viaa Class 2 Master function called "SSA" (Set Slave Address). An S7 PLC is always a Class 1 Master and can NOT carry out this "SSA" command and you'll find more info on this subject at the Profibus SSA(set slave address) function thread. Having said the above (and just when you thought it can't be a "problem" in the S7), ABB's RPBA01 DP Slave interface also supports Node address setting via Parameter 918 (see itsmanualfor more on this). As such, your S7 could eitheruse the PKW mechanism to change this Parameter (if a PPO with PKW's is used) oracyclic DPV1 related Parameter writes (via SFC58/59or SFB52/53). Note too that the Node addresschange only becomes active after a drive power off/on soyour S7 program couldhave (accidently?) changed this parameter long beforeit becomes noted. Question is:Is the S7 program writing to Parameter 918? I hope this helps

Choppy Regular Member Joined: 8/19/2008 Last visit: 4/9/2025 Posts: 13 Rating: (1)	Hi Fritz, Thanks for the reply. The ABB inverter is controlling a fan, so I only write to the control word and the speed setpoint. I am communicating using PPO6, which has no facility to write to the PKW's.
