S7-1200 SD card project transfer from V11 to V19

Borden_Fallon Joined: 8/8/2025 Last visit: 8/8/2025 Posts: 1 Rating: (0)	Hello, We have an old machine with a S7-1200 PLC that is running on TIA portal V11 and it needs an upgrade (change in logic). Now I have managed to upgrade the project successfully from V11 to V13 and then to V19 (no firmware issues). I am planning to use a Siemens SD card as a transfer card for the upgrade. Will there be any issues upgrading the PLC from V11 to V19 with an SD card? Is there something I have to pay attention to? Any help is appreciated!

My main concern is making the machine inoperative when using a SD card to upgrade from TIA11 to TIA19 (in other words, I want to avoid that). We don't have TIA11 on our laptops anymore and we don't want to use it anymore. We don't want any of our staff to be at location, we just want to handover the SD card to the customer with instructions.

So what do you do if a volunteer says that you should go ahead and things do go wrong? We have no idea of how the hardware structure and program looks like. Then there is the complication of programmed parameters that may not have been logged properly. I sympathise with your situation, but I do not know how to help you. Probably best to do a lab test of your situation if you have doubts on the ‘theory’ (the document @Tarwar linked to). Consider speaking to Siemens if they can help with removing doubts and give commitment. That is what I would have done, since Siemens should be able to make a test with the hardware you are using.

Reassurance is appreciated. This is a Siemens forum community, so thought I start here before I contacted Siemens.

Opening the door to something more wide could give a reaction. Consider explicitly stating something like: “Has anyone here have experience of updating a PLC with an SMC where the software version was upgraded too?” For my own case I have used an SMC card for an upgrade to a higher firmware and software version (FW:V4.2 / V13.0.2) but failed. The upgrade on the PLC worked, but the HMI communication stopped working. The HMI (KP300) was on V11. The HMI needed to be updated to V12 for it to communicate back to the PLC (for the new update).

Except in the case of a S7-1200 PLC from TIA V11 to V19. That is why my question is specific. And I am sorry that your case did not work, but that is not what I was looking for as I already stated that the firmware is unchanged. I have not posted this call for help for the sake of getting as much reactions as I could, only and hopefully for a reaction that is specific and helpful to my issue. If someone can not contribute to my question then they don't need to reply.

FW v2.2 or v3.0? If it is v3.0, is the physical device FW 3.0.0, or FW 3.0.1? For FW v2.2, is there an HMI involved in the project? If so, you may need to update firmware (operating system) on the HMI in order to communicate. There are too many unknowns to answer with any type of assurance. I would contact Siemens Support with all the specifics and ask for their assurance. Same cost as asking here. When I upgrade the V11 project to V13 the firmware is V3.0 and the same when upgraded to V19. This means (I highly assume) that the PLC in the V11 project was also at V3.0. As far as I know TIA does not automatically change/upgrade the FW when upgrading the TIA project. I tested this by creating a TIA13 project with a 1200 PLC with FW1.0 if I remember correctly. This FW is not supported in TIA19. When I tried upgrading from TIA13 to TIA19 it returned a fault stating it cannot continue with the upgrade and that I had to upgrade the FW in the TIA13 project to a compatible one for TIA19. I will also contact Siemens Support in due time.
