Stepper motors with s7-1200

Hello,

I would like to control 5 stepper motors with a Plc. With an older PLC version, such as, s7-200 It could be done with  EM-253 cars. But i don't know how can be done now.

I would be glad, If someone could help me.

Natively the newest version of S7-1200 can handle 4 motion open control loops. Nothing stops you from using 2 CPUs and network these via the internal Profinet ports. x2 S7-1200 CPUs should still be less expensive than S7-1500 or ET200 type derivatives.

Some questions for alternatives:
- does all 5 motors run at the same time?
- have you looked into using stepper motor amplifiers that has control built in?
- would it be possible to change one axis to an intelligent  servo?
- have you considered motion controllers?

No, the 5 motors don't run at the same time, in fact, they run in two groups, a group of two motors and the other one of 3 motors.

Which is the cpu version that can handle 4 motors?

No, i don't have considered motion controllers because is mandatory to use a plc. In fact, i must use an s7-1200 or an s7-1500.

Hi.

The CPUs with firmware 3.x and 4.x will handle control for x4 motors.
If I may assume you use a CPU1214C and recommending software..
a) 6ES7 214-1AG31-0XB0           TIA Portal V11 SP2 Update 5
                                                           TIA Portal V12 SP? Update ?
(recommended, SP1 available)  TIA Portal V13 SP0 Update 6

b) 6ES7 214-1AG40-0XB0           TIA Portal V13 SP0 Update 6 (or higher)

c) 6ES7 214-1AG41-0XB0           TIA Portal V13 SP1 Update 0 (or higher)

I strongly suggest you select (b) - it is what I would choose if it was my project. The firmware 4.x CPU allows for more option on where the pulse generated output is connected from and more choices to what signal is generated. I would not suggest the firmware 4.1 in (c).

If you are running less than 4 motors at any one time, then it will be possible to use only x1 S7-1200 PLC. You could probably use a CPU1212C, but maybe consider using a CPU1214 instead. As for the possibility of multiplexing the outputs, there is a reference to look at..

From the Appendix of the above document is a description of how to multiplex the motion controller to drive several motors.. provided you do not need to drive those at the same time. Be sure to use the number A5E03790551-03 as a search within this web page for a downloadable version.
