Simatic Manager (Step7 v5.2 + SP1), problem running under "user" accounts

Hodaka Posts: 3 Rating: (0)	Hi, First of all, I'm an IT guy, and know very little about the Simatic Step 7 software. I'm installing this for a professor who teaches courses using PLCs. We have it installed on in XP Pro and it runs under an administrator account. I followed the directions for granting "users" full control over the Step7 directory that I found here: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/23626356 However, when I login and launch Simatic Manager as a non-admin "user", I continue to get the following error: 256:129 "You can only start SIMATIC Manger/STEP 7 on this computer if you are logged in as the primary user or have administrator rights." These are University CLC computers and there is no way I'll be granting anyone administrator or even Power User rights on them. I hate even having to open up directories like this because of the possible abuse, but I am willing to go at least that far to get this program to work. I tested granting full access to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SIEMENS registry entry in case something was trying to write there, but it didn't help. Can anyone help? Thanks, Jeff

For installing the STEP7 V5.2 SP1 software you need the rights that are described in the next link: Which user rights do you need to work with STEP 7 versions V5.2 and V5.3 in MS Windows NT/2000/2003/XP? For the Access rights you can read the next link: How can you assign Full Control access to the STEP 7 installation directory? I have Windows XP Professional SP2 with STEP7 V5.4 and don't need Administrator rights. Which version do you have?

Hodaka Posts: 3 Rating: (0)	Sorry, I put it in the subject.. it's v5.2 w/SP1.. I've followed all of those directions, giving the "users" group full access. I even gave full access starting at c:\program files\siemens and double checked that it had recursively granted that same right all the way down.. users's should have full rights to everything.. however, I can still only run the Simatic Manager as an account with admin rights. My test accounts with just "user" rights gets the error I listed in my first post.. The link I posted above into the FAQ seemed fairly straightforward. I've had to do this kind of thing before with other programs. However, for whatever reason, It just isn't running..

This is contrary to all of the FAQs links that Late and I both posted.. I guess we're out of luck then.. I hope someone updates those FAQs with correct information, because I spent a huge amount of time trying to get v5.2 sp1 to run..

Hi Jef, Thats life, but I agree with you that it is not good written in the FAQs and Manuals. [:(] Maybe it is better to upgrade to STEP7 V5.4 so that everything is working well with the rights [:blush:] You can upgrade to STEP7 V5.4 by a upgradepackage: STEP 7 V5.4 Released for Delivery If you have the standard STEP7 (no Professional) then you need the number 6ES7810-4CC08-0YE5 SIMATIC S7, STEP7 V5.4 UPGRADE FOR ABOUT 400€
